It’s all about painstaking preparation
- Repair and/or replacement of damaged wood –anywhere on the house
- Caulking around all windows and exterior doors
- Patching any holes with wood filler
- Cleaning the surface with a soapy solution
- Removing any mildew with a commercial mildew killer
- Rinsing your house down and allowing time for it to dry completely
- We will even trim back trees or large bushes if necessary prior to exterior staining
This extensive preparation ensures the stain adheres to the surface and will not show signs of failure later.
Helping you choose the best stain
You have two basic choices: solid color or semi-transparent. We will discuss with you the look you want to achieve.
Solid color stains cover wood imperfections or unattractive grain.
Semi-transparent exterior staining highlights the wood beneath the grain. It enhances natural quality and texture.
- We understand that this is an investment you will live with for years. You will be delighted from initial product selection through standing back and admiring the results. Before you step back to survey the whole project, we will have cleaned up and left no evidence we were there; except, of course, the outstanding look of your home.
Your work is done by our employees – never sub-contractors
Quality control begins with “the boss” watching the work. Although we are proud to say, most of what we see is the enjoyment staining brings to our master craftsmen. It’s one of those very satisfying jobs: you see the smooth, restored surface you have prepared for
exterior staining. You see immediate results of your work as the coats go on effortlessly. You see the delight of the homeowner; and, yes, you see the boss’ pride in a job superbly done.
Your free estimate will include our calculation of how much stain will be required. It is all a function of the square footage of your home. You can figure on one gallon per 200 square feet.
As we estimate the timeline for finishing the work, we understand the fact that stain is absorbed into the wood more quickly than paint, so it dries faster. Normally the stain will be thoroughly dry within a couple of days.
The start date for exterior staining must be flexible
- We’ll keep a close eye on the forecast, because stain can only be applied at the proper temperature. 70 degrees is best, but we can safely do your work in a range between 60 to 85 degrees. This can vary with the brand and qualities of the stain itself.
- We must avoid high humidity when applying stain. All finishes, including stains and paint, don’t dry well in moist conditions. This also means waiting two or three days after a rain storm to begin exterior staining.
- Once we begin, you will notice that we avoid staining on hot surfaces and start on a side of your house not in direct sunlight. This makes certain the stain penetrates and dries predictably.
